Competition format

System of play and tie-breaks

Each category is a separate seven-round, non-FIDE-rated Swiss tournament with no play-off matches.

  • Games use 10 minutes plus 5 seconds increment from move one. Default time is when a playerโ€™s clock reaches zero.
  • Final ties are resolved in this order: direct encounter; number of wins including forfeits; Buchholz Cut-1; Buchholz; Sonneborn-Berger; then toss of coin.
  • A FIDE ID is not required. Players should know the rules of chess and be able to complete a game.

Result procedure

Reporting results and walkovers

Players must call an arbiter when a game finishes and should not reset the board until the result has been checked.

  • The arbiter verifies the score in both playersโ€™ presence, after which both players sign the result sheet.
  • Both players are responsible for reporting the result. If only one remains, the arbiter may record the result from that playerโ€™s report.
  • If neither player reports the result, both players receive zero points for that game.
  • Walkovers must be marked on the result sheet.

Age-appropriate play

Illegal moves and support arbiters

Support arbiters may clarify rules and intervene when a young player is genuinely stuck, but may not give strategic advice.

  • First illegal move: correct the move and allow a take-back. From the second illegal move onward, the opponent receives one extra minute. The fifth illegal move loses the game.
  • Players may ask whether a position is checkmate, whether a move is legal, how a piece moves, or what to do while in check.
  • Players may not ask what move to play, whether a move is good, who is winning, or for tactical, planning, or evaluation advice.
  • An arbiter may intervene when a player is stuck in check, repeatedly makes illegal moves, faces a confusing position, or remains frozen or confused for an extended period.

Playing hall

Conduct and electronic devices

Players must follow the tournament regulations and all arbiter instructions. The Chief Arbiterโ€™s decisions are final.

  • Smoking is prohibited throughout the venue and building.
  • During a game, players may speak only to the arbiter or their opponent as permitted by the Laws of Chess. Players who finish become spectators and must leave the playing area after reporting their result.
  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, playback or recording equipment, and other electronic devices are prohibited in the playing hall. Random checks may be conducted before or after games.
  • A device that must be brought in must be switched off and stored in a bag below the desk. With prior arbiter permission, a player without a bag may place it face down on the desk. A visible, felt, or audible device, including any ring or sound, results in an immediate loss without appeal.
